But my Muse more than liked it, as you will see below. The 14th of February Lyrics: Maureen S. O'Brien Music: "St. Clair's Defeat", Ohio trad. Or anything that fits. (The scansion is accurate to the original -- you can fit in a variable number of syllables per line, depending how you sing the verse.) Inspiration: "The 14th of February" by Ravenscion (whose website is http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dunes/6767/ ) In a life in law enforcement, there are bad things I have known. Aftermaths of rape and murder, those who died slow and alone. But I pray to any god that cares there'll never come to me Another night like that cold night, on the 14th (of) February. Just four agents from the Bureau -- our unit was that small. There was Jeff and Fox and Dana -- and me, and that was all. On St. Valentine's, we visited a man upon a hill; His rifle cracked the silence, and Dana went down still. So we called in on our cellphones and we called 911, But we were out in BFD; it took too long to come. And Dana was the doctor; we could only watch her die. Fox couldn't bring her back to life; we had to watch him try. Fox took his gun to shoot himself, but Jeff took it away And we watched Fox kneeling in the snow, not knowing what to say. A box was in his pocket; he took out a golden band -- A lovely thing -- and slid the ring upon his dead love's hand. They said that it was our fault; and our unit was shut down. And the last time we all met was to put Dana in the ground. Sometimes I've seen Jeff around since then; I never more did see Fox since that night the gold shone bright, on the 14th (of) February. In a life in law enforcement, many bad things I have known. Aftermaths of rape and murder, those who died slow and alone. But I pray to any god that cares, there'll never come to me Another sight like that cold night, on the 14th (of) February. --------------------------------------------------------- Maureen S.
